DANCE

At Inciardi Dance, we want our students to develop self-control, personal growth through achievement, self-confidence, and the love of dance. Dancers will enjoy learning choreography to stimulating musical selections.
Technique is the “nuts and bolts” of dance. It is accomplished through carefully planned exercises that each serve a specific purpose. Good training will last a lifetime.
While dance should be methodically and correctly instructed, it should be presented in an encouraging and positive manner. Our students are special to us. We hope to create rewarding dance memories.
Combo 1 (5 yrs and up) - Tentatively set for Tuesday from 6:30 to 7:30 pm

This class is structured around an introduction to ballet, tap dance, and floor tumbling. More time is spent on dance training than in KinderCombo. Some students elect to also enroll in a gymnastics class at this time.
Combo I is a prelude to formal ballet class. Although not using a rigorous schedule, this curriculum begins the world of “real dance.” Correct technique of ballet positions, demi plies (bending of the knees), tendu (pointing of the foot) are taught and center floor steps are introduced. Tap sounds, tap steps, and sequencing (remembering combinations) are included in this schedule. Playful music, along with classical selections, are used for teaching.
Attire: A class leotard, pink tights, tan tap shoes (ribbons to be replaced with tap ties) and pink ballet shoes. Hair: In dog ears, braids or two buns on each side of the head. Do not use one ponytail – one ‘band’ in the middle of the head will bump when hitting the floor (long hair not secured is hot, messy, and can get stepped on).

Ballet Classes (7 yrs and up)
Combo II (7 years and up) – is a combined class of ballet and tap offered for the beginner through the low intermediate. The majority of time is spent on ballet, although building a firm tap foundation is also stressed.
Classical Ballet is instructed in the traditional manner of a barre’ and center. Depending on the level of the class, allegro, adage, turns, leaps, beats, port de bras, vocabulary and combinations are taught. Emphasis is on technique.
Pointe’ (toe or hard shoes) is permitted when the dancer is at the proper level in ballet and is committed to more than a once-a-week lesson. The youngest age allowed is 12 years (teacher permission).
Attire: A solid color ballet leotard, pink tights, and pink ballet shoes. A class leotard is required for most classes. Dance skirts are allowed only in the center of the floor (not barre’). Dance sweaters are always allowed in cold weather if they are close fitting. Leg warmers are allowed only in cold weather and not bunched around the ankle. Hair: short ponytail or bun (the neck must show). Bangs pinned back from the face.
Boys – a tight, white t-shirt and black tights, leggings or shorts. Jazz pants (black) or sweat pants are sometimes allowed. Check with the studio. Black or white ballet shoes.

Jazz, Tap, & Hip Hop

Jazz draws from all forms of dance including African, South American and particularly ballet. Lyrical, traditional, music theatre, and contemporary are some of the styles studied. To be accomplished in jazz, ballet must be the foundation.
Attire: Leotard with tights, leggings or capris. Ÿ Bootie shorts with capris, leggings or tights and a tight fitting solid color cami or halter top (leotard fabric). Ÿ Shoes – check with the studio. Ÿ Jazz pants can be worn in cold weather (fabric at knee – tight enough to see the outline of the knee). Ÿ Hair: ponytail or up on head – bangs pinned off of the face.
Tap exposes the student to a variety of rhythms. Metal taps are attached to the shoes to make sounds much like drumming. Tap helps to develop musical phasing, weight placement, and of course, rhythm. Clarity of sound, as well as training in combinations and routines are emphasized.
Attire: Same as ballet or jazz. Can wear tap shorts with leotard.
Hip Hop – a street style form of jazz. Ballet training is not required for this class.
Boys Hip Hop (8 years and up) – A special class just for guys.
Attire: A class uniform will be purchased. Hip Hop taught in Jazz classes: any comfortable clothes. Shoes purchased through the studio for performance. Tennis shoes are used for class.
